2016 Special Issue of TESL Canada Journal

 REFUGEES IN CANADA: ESL FOR RESILIENCE AND EMPOWERMENT

 Guest Editors: Bahar Biazar, PhD, and Soheila Pashang, PhD

As a signatory to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, Canada has offered protection to and addressed the settlement and integration needs of refugees for decades. Canada is home to a diverse population of refugees, accepting over 14,500 refugees annually since 2013 and an additional 25,000 Syrian refugees since December 2015. Refugees have demonstrated enormous resilience by overcoming pre-migratory trauma while establishing roots in their new home. However, the struggle does not end once they arrive in Canada, as many continue to face barriers to integration, including low English language proficiency.

The aim of this special issue is to explore potential strategies for the TESL community to further its commitment to the resettlement process of refugees in Canada in both K-12 and adult ESL contexts. In this themed issue, we invite papers about, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • ESL Education for resistance, resilience, and empowerment
  • Creative and innovative ESL teaching methods: Arts-informed teaching; memoirs, etc.
  • Experience with refugees in the language classroom
  • Trauma and learning: Effects on language acquisition
  • ESL education and refugees

This special issue is strengthened by its multi-disciplinary nature. Thus, we encourage a broad range of papers from the social sciences that explore the ties that bind migration, trauma, empowerment, resilience, and English language acquisition.
